I've looked online, but I can't seem to find anything. My friend is 18, he only has a level 1 license. I know it expired when he turned 18, so for him to get a refresher course in the road he needs a temp license before his lvl 3 license. How much is it? Does it even cost money? Thanks in advance!

IIRC when you're 18 you can just go and take the test.
*Im 25 so I don't really know

Yea, but wouldn't you need a current permit in order to take the test?
*I have no idea either, 24 and went through this license crap in NY

In OK if you were 18 all provisions were removed. No lessons, no hours of experience, no permit, nothing was required other than the written/practical/eye test. Granted this was in the 90s so it may have changed.

I'm 25 and haven't cared since I was 16.......apparently all of us Michigan oppos are in our early 20s.

That's what I'm thinking. though he may be able to just take the road test, he hasn't driven in a while, and he needs more experience.

Dang...I'm feeling old now, I'm 27 going on 28 next week, lol. But yeah, it's been 9 years since I've delt with this stuff..

Yea, a lot of states now have graduated licensing requirements so it may have changed. Which is also a factor people neglect when repeating that old "kids these days don't care about driving" bit.

I believe if you are over 18, you can just take a knowledge test and a driving skills test. Just call up you local Secretary of State office, they will be able to tell you for sure. Sometimes calling is better than the internet, that's what I had to do after searching for multiple hours about taking motorcycle safety classes out of state and still getting my MI cycle endorsement.
Edit: Here is the link to the SOS website: http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-1… It says you have to pass the knowledge and vision tests, then get a temporary instruction permit. 30 days after receiving the permit you can take the driving skills test.

I called earlier, it was a machine that got me no where, :/. I probably need to go in person, but I work during the hours it's open.

Out of curiosity I just checked. They've since instituted a graduated system for 16-18 year olds but 18+ it's still just written/practical/eye exam. However, if you're 18+ and responsibly choose to get a learners permit you're then banned from applying for a license for a time period. Makes sense! haha.

Lol yea, someone dropped the ball on that part!

I never even knew there were restrictions and levels on Michigan license. Maybe because I'm 29? They didn't even have the vertical licenses when I was younger.

I'm 27 (going on 28 next week), it happened around my time. Lvl 1 is essentially a permit. Lvl 3 is a full fledged licence, when your 18. Lvl 2 is a restricted license. You must be 16, you can't have others in the car, and you can't drive at certain times of the night.
The vertical license are for underage people.
See I know all of this! Just not the thing I want to know!

Damn, I forgot we have difference licences! When I got mine at 16 it was horizontal, then changed to vertical when that came out, then back to the right way. I always thought at 18 you could just take the tests and be done with it. Give your friend some more practice first so he doesn't mess it up!
27 here btw, man it's been awhile since I went through this shit!

Yeah, I've always had vertical until I was 21.
I'm planning in taking him out on the 21st, though I was hoping we could get on real roads eventually. Right now, we're restricted to parking lots and private property (I know a place). The next best thing would be for him to ride along with me, and I can Demonstrate what to do.
